BLANCA MASSIF AREA, Colorado -- To get into the heart of the Blanca Massif, I had to follow a U.S.D.A. Forest Service road that followed the Huerfano River to its headwaters. The road began at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountans and trecherously climbed along a terminal moraine and a lateral moraine of a long-melted glacier before entering the upper part of the Huerfano Valley. This view is from the western ridge of the massif, looking north-northeastward. The Wet Mountains are along the horizon at right.
